Australia's Angela Ballard has started a hectic schedule at the IPC athletics world championships in Lyon with a silver medal in the T53 wheelchair 200m 12ax7.

In the first of her five events at Parc de Parilly, the three-time London Paralympics medallist duelled with Lisha Huan in the straight but was eventually overpowered by the Chinese athlete.

Ballard (30.15sec) finished just 0.39s behind Huan, with American Chelsea McClammer (31.95s) third.

The 32-year-old Ballard now turns her focus to the 100m, 400m, 800m and 1500m events.

"With such a big program I just have to take each day as it comes," said Ballard, who is coached by Paralympic icon Louise Sauvage personalized clothing labels.

"I still have six more days of competition, but my preparation has been good and I am ready to go."

NSW's Guy Henly won Australia's other medal early on the second day of competition, claiming bronze in the F37/38 discus for athletes with cerebral palsy or an acquired brain injury.

The 26-year-old threw an Oceania record of 51.13m in his first attempt which was enough to secure third place dermes.
